The University of California, Davis has sat its whole baseball team down in order to investigate allegations of misconduct.
The UC Davis athletic department announced Wednesday that the university’s “Office of Compliance & Policy is investigating these allegations, and the entire baseball program also has been placed on suspension pending the outcome of this review. In addition, the baseball coaching staff also has been placed on administrative leave.”
The statement didn’t specify the allegations, but said that the review is expected to start very soon and will last “for the first couple months of the fall quarter,” leaving it unknown as to when the baseball team will be able to resume activities.
“We are committed to conducting a thorough assessment to determine the best path forward to provide a safe and inclusive experience for all team members,” UC Davis’ statement reads.
Michelle Dapper, of KCRA-TV, tweeted a copy of the email sent to incoming UC Davis baseball players. The message was similar to the university’s statement, but added that “We understand that receiving this news may be difficult and upsetting. We also understand this information will lead to questions about your status as an incoming student-athlete. This review does not impact your admissions nor your athletic scholarship with UC Davis.
“If you would like to consider other opportunities in light of this pending review, please contact our Sr. Associate AD for Compliance/SWA, Katherine Zedonis. She can answer any questions related to withdrawing from UC Davis and/or a release of a National Letter of Intent (NLI) to start the recruiting process again.”
UC Davis went 14-43 in 2021, including 8-32 in the Big West Conference.
