Morgan Park Sports Center

Chicago, IL
Construction Cost: $18 million
Area / Square Feet: 64,000
Occupancy Date: September 2015

Owned by the Chicago Park District, the Morgan Park Sports Center was built on district land that had been vacant for years.

The building contains an indoor ice arena, a gymnastics center, two classrooms and support spaces. The ice arena was designed to NHL dimensions and accommodates year-round competitive hockey, figure skating and recreational ice skating. It features four team locker rooms and two multipurpose locker rooms to accommodate up to 180 skaters, as well as space for 845 spectators.

The gymnastics gym is a world-class training facility offering year-round training and space for USGA competition. It contains 25 pieces of equipment situated around the floor exercise platform, a landing pit and designated areas for youth gymnastics. In addition to the recreation areas, there are spaces for the community to meet on the mezzanine level.

The building’s design combines two precast concrete volumes that hold the two primary services, linked by a detailed glass connection that provides a glimpse of the activity within. Each interior area was given its own distinct identity, and is comprised of unique products and colors.
