Blue Springs Fieldhouse Renovation

Blue Springs, MO

Area / Square Feet: 76,000

As an alternative to constructing a new community recreation and aquatics center, the City of Blue Springs developed an innovative plan to meet the community’s recreation needs by purchasing a privately owned but underutilized indoor athletic facility and transforming it into a new and modern community recreation center.

A previously conducted community recreation center feasibility study, citizen surveys and other recent strategic plans helped to guide the design. Amenities provided include multi-activity courts for basketball, volleyball and pickleball; a synthetic turf field; walking tracks integrated around the perimeter of the basketball courts and turf; a state-of-the-art fitness center; rooms for aerobics, dance and group cycling classes; party/meeting rooms; locker rooms and a child-watch area. Improvements, such as high-impact graphics, were also made to the building’s exterior.

“Fitness and Recreation for All” was the motto developed for the facility, and its popularity among Blue Springs residents of all ages continues to grow, as evidenced by robust sales in memberships and daily passes. Further, the facility has helped to breathe new life into a struggling building — all at a low cost.
