NexSource Centre

Sylvan Lake, AB 2018

Project Description

NexSource Centre was initiated by the collapse of Sylvan Lake’s old wooden

arena. Community fundraising was instrumental in championing the project

after a programming study confirmed the need for a replacement arena, a new curling rink and a community center. The existing site was a collection of detached buildings with central parking between them.

NexSource Centre features a senior center with a kitchen and access to outdoor gathering space at the entry. Across the central corridor is the new recreation arena with a glazed end wall offering views into the arena. The new arena is flooded with natural light that reduces lighting costs and adds ambience. Spectator seating is located above, as well as a running track.

Multipurpose rooms straddle the upper floor space between the two arenas, which allows for programmatic flexibility. The central core of the building includes access control to the swimming pool. Closest to the administration area is a playground, concessions, a seating area and public restrooms. To the southwest of the control area is the new curling rink with lower club space and an upper curling lounge overlooking the curling rink and existing arena.

Keys to the project are multipurpose rooms equipped with operable walls

and connections to the curling rink. This accommodates multiple configurations for events, and during summer months the curling building and multipurpose rooms convert to spaces that offer the community

a conference center to host banquets, graduations and regional trade shows.

The southeast part of the project includes the salvation of the existing 1,000-seat arena.
