University of North Dakota - Student Wellness Center

Grand Forks, ND
Construction Cost: $16.19 million
Area / Square Feet: 106,865

The University of North Dakota?s wellness center was designed around a recurring wave motif recalling the rolling plains of North Dakota as well as the meandering journey through the seven dimensions of wellness — physical, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, social, environmental and vocational. In the lobby, seven pillars and seven colors in the terrazzo floor represent UND?s commitment to holistic wellness.

Individual dimensions of wellness are emphasized in rooms such as the Hopper Danley Memorial Quiet Lounge, where students can enjoy a serene atmosphere for meditation, prayer or reflection. Here, every feature — from the comfortable seating to the labyrinth carpet pattern — is intended to help students connect with their spiritual side. Meanwhile, a library/ media area with resource materials, the Burnt Toast demonstration kitchen and other classrooms are designed to stimulate students? intellect.

Other major facility components include a three-court gymnasium, a multipurpose activity court, a suspended track, a 10,000-square-foot fitness floor, a 5,000-square-foot cardio deck, a group cycling studio and climbing wall (physical); the Element Spa and wellness suite, which offers massage and reflexology therapy (emotional); and the Well juice and snack bar (social). The facility meets the environmental wellness component by adhering to LEED® sustainable design principles, and the vocational component by offering students a variety of opportunities for self-enhancement.
