The New Port Richey Recreation Center and Aquatic Complex was designed to provide a common area where two adjoining neighborhoods could come together while bolstering community pride in recreation. The multilevel center houses a double basketball court and a 2,000-square foot fitness center, as well as three multipurpose rooms for toddler and teen use, as well as dance, aerobics and karate classes, and other activities. Its companion outdoor aquatic facility features four separate pools: a zero-depth-entry family pool, a six-lane competition pool, a twoboard diving pool and a plunge pool with a 35-foot-high water slide. Other amenities include waterspouts, slides, water play features and a shaded concessions area.

The exterior’s curvilinear main roofs and color scheme fi t the community’s architectural vernacular. In addition, the Florida Gulf Coast location called for a building designed to serve as a storm shelter and withstand 170-mph winds.

Both the recreation center and aquatic complex designs convey a "disorganized order," marked by a blend of rectilinear shapes, curves and rotated forms. An 18-foot rise from one corner of the site to the next inspired a six-foot offset between the lobby, support spaces and exercise room, with the main recreational fl oor designed and constructed six feet below that level. This offset, combined with an openplan concept, allows for views from the lobby space to the recreation courts.
