Providing a new home for the School of Kinesiology and Recreation (part of the College of Applied Science & Technology), Recreation Services (a department of Student Affairs) and other wellness partners, the Student Fitness Center and McCormick Hall boasts many functional improvements, departmental efficiencies and beneficial spatial relationships.
Throughout three stories of recreation and academic space, the interior architecture enhances users’ ability to visually experience program areas. In the main west lobby, users approaching the customer service desk have dramatic views into multiple activity spaces, including the pool, climbing wall, juice bar, classrooms, the gymnasium, the fitness center, group exercise rooms and an elevated track.
The dynamic form and composition of the building’s exterior complements the older collegiate Georgian character of the campus, while boldly reinterpreting that character into a new composition. The building faces feature extensive amounts of brick with punched windows placed to harmonize with the existing vocabulary of the campus.
The largest building project ever undertaken by the university, the facility extends from the campus quad to Main Street and is poised to become a hub of student activity. The project included rejuvenating the existing McCormick Hall as an active learning, recreation and competition environment, and several administrative, learning and instructional spaces were added in a new west addition to McCormick Hall, enhancing its connectivity to the rest of the building.
