The Portage Credit Union (PCU) Centre provides the city and rural municipality of Portage la Prairie with a multiuse recreation facility that brings together otherwise widespread or nonexistent recreation components.

Situated adjacent to an existing outdoor leisure pool located on a natural lake, the facility blends with nearby natural elements, including local exhibition grounds, walkways and paths. The project involves two major program components: an indoor aquatic center and a twin-pad ice complex. A community hall used for larger gatherings, tournaments and general circulation divides these two elements. The central administrative area offers views for supervision of the main hall and the fitness center, as well as access to the aquatic facility and multipurpose spaces.

Inside, the facility features extensive daylighting, as well as views of the lake and causeway. The concourse surrounding the 1,700-seat ice arena offers glimpses of the landscape through north-facing linear glazing. On the aquatics side, extensive north-facing glazing reduces the need for artificial lighting while adding color through patterned tinting.

The exterior design responds to economic constraints through the use of insulated metal panels with compositions of concrete masonry units and aluminum framed fenestration. The composition, color and materials reflect the local prairie while celebrating the vibrancy of the activities within.
