Loyola University Maryland

Baltimore, Md. 2011

Project Description

Home to Loyola’s soccer, lacrosse and rugby teams, this project represents the transformation of a former landfill site to include a state-of-the-art stadium featuring a 6,000-seat grandstand, synthetic turf fields and views of Baltimore. The stadium was situated at the highest elevation of the site, just west of the landfill area.

The stadium’s dual faces look to the west over a forest and to the east toward Loyola’s core campus. The west facade consists of two masses, skewed and torqued to simulate flexing muscles, containing the primary lobby to the south and a stair tower to the north. The east face of the building is anchored by the grandstands and is capped by suites, a function room, broadcast booths and a terrace overlooking
the field.

Grandstands are split in half by an open concourse that overlooks the fields, giving spectators a continuous connection to the game, while the concourse sits atop a two-story block base that anchors the five-story composition. The primary structure for the press box sits atop the base and in line with the two towers, creating a bold collegiate expression.

The main entrance on the west welcomes students, athletes, visitors and coaches in a double-height volume adjacent to the elevator core. Providing a focal point in the space is a wall clad with the campus stone, helping unite the athletes’ spaces at the entry field level with the coaches’ and press spaces on the next level.
