University of Central Florida Recreation and Wellness Center Expansion

Orlando, Fla.
Construction Cost: $21 million
Area / Square Feet: 62,000
Occupancy Date: December 2010

This project, which added 62,000 square feet of new space to the existing recreation and wellness center, represents the second phase of a multiphase expansion. New additions include more space in the cardio fitness center, racquetball courts, multipurpose rooms, a two-court multipurpose activity court, a 25-yard-by-25-meter competition pool, new locker rooms, a wet classroom, staff offices, a 25-person conference room and student workspaces. The project also includes provisions for a new Outdoor Adventure Center service facility, encompassing a reception area, a student activities center, staff offices, student employee workspaces, a 16-person conference room and an equipment storage and maintenance area.

Three major design elements provide a unified aesthetic with the existing building: similar roofing forms and clerestory detailing, the continuation of the broad radial form of the fitness area, and matching masonry material and banding detail.

A fluid tie-in exists between new and existing spaces, while separation is provided for fire and other life-safety issues. Four large horizontal sliding fire doors create an enormous open area between the new and existing facilities. Special attention was given to the design and integration of the second-floor patio, as well as the spacious two-story curtainwalls and a large vaulted clerestory that take advantage of the extraordinary climate and exterior views, while also utilizing natural daylight.
