Barrington Park District Fitness and Recreation Center

Barrington, Ill.

Area / Square Feet: 54,668

Situated within 37-acre Langendorf Park — which also includes a field house, an aquatic center and multiple fields operated by the park district — this recreation center helps fulfill the needs of Barrington residents, while reflecting sustainable design principles. Featuring elements such as brick, stone, precast panels, aluminum windows and curtainwalls, a standing-seam PVC roofing membrane and metal panel roof screen enclosures, the facility reflects a contemporary design that blends seamlessly with the existing park landscape and facilities.

Located on the first floor are the double gymnasium, two large community/banquet rooms that can be divided, a nursery and preschool wing, and recreation staff offices. The second floor includes a 5,100-square-foot fitness center with locker rooms, a walking/running track, three fitness studios and administrative offices.

Central hallways on both floors serve as conduits to programming space. In an effort to reduce locker room congestion, additional lockers that echo the interior color palette are placed in the hallways. Interior materials reflect the district’s goal of having patrons “experience the outdoors while indoors.” This was expressed in earth-tone terracotta, slate blue and chocolate brown elements throughout the facility.
