Area / Square Feet: 102,850
Occupancy Date: January 2011

The 103,000-square-foot Columbus State University Student Recreation Center is designed to create an on-campus focal point for student and faculty interaction while meeting the recreation needs of a growing student body.

The building plan is organized around two main points of entry. The north entrance is directly accessible from the commuter parking lot and bus route, while the south entrance engages the campus. Each level contains a control and service desk. The main concourse through the building provides gathering areas and visual access to multiple functions.

The fitness center contains three distinct areas: heavy weights located on the lower level, cardio on the upper level and an owner-requested quiet fitness area in a separate room off the main fitness area for exercisers desiring more privacy. To minimize laps per mile on the elevated track, designers extended its length and swung it through the natatorium.

Other recreation components include a 30-foot climbing wall and bouldering walls, a two-court gymnasium, racquetball courts and two multipurpose studios, plus locker rooms and support space. Social areas include a student lounge, a juice bar, meeting rooms with videoconferencing capability and a multipurpose banquet hall with catering kitchen.

Brick and cut limestone were specified in a color range in keeping with the existing campus palette, and rough-cut limestone provides interest at each entry.
