The United States Military Academy Preparatory School is a one-year program for USMA candidates who need additional instruction in order to meet academic performance criteria. The mission of USMAPS is to provide focused academic, military and physical instruction in a moral and ethical environment — preparing, motivating and inspiring candidates for success.

In order to support and enhance this mission, developing a design solution that leveraged both the natural opportunities of the site and the school’s location within the historic grounds of the USMA was a major priority. The site was an old landfill; buildings were positioned off the landfill and down the mountainside, creating a dramatic setting appropriate to the academy, as well as a natural backdrop for three outdoor synthetic turf athletic fields. Each building, with the exception of the indoor field, has a lobby space that signifies arrival.

The athletic facility has an additional entrance, which offers views into a public corridor that can serve as a memorial hall and provide visual continuity into the multipurpose room, gymnasium and cardio workout area. The facility also is on track to meet or exceed LEED Gold certification.
