Middlesex Centre creates a new civic heart and identity for the community, as well as sets a standard for sustainable development in the area. The main program elements include a twin pad ice arena, a fitness center with gymnasium and indoor running track, and a branch library organized around a central atrium.

As part of the ground-floor’s “T” circulation design, the library and fitness center flank the atrium and address the street and forecourt through large glazed openings. A second-floor foyer provides views over the atrium and primary ice pad while providing access to additional fitness, gathering and viewing areas. Durable low-maintenance materials were chosen for interior walls and floors. A coordinated color scheme serves as a wayfinding device, with a dedicated wall color for each program element merging in the main atrium to create playful wall patterns.

Similarly, program elements are expressed individually on the exterior. An extended canopy with a cedar soffit and stone cladding identify the library and bring warmth to the building entrance. Specialized glass, combined with a series of horizontal aluminum cap extensions, identifies the fitness center and main circulation zones. Finally, a metal-clad “wrap” encompasses the arena volume.
