Love Municipal Pool

San Angelo, Texas 2013

Project Description

Designated as a Texas Landmark Historical Site in 1989, the San Angelo municipal pool closed in summer 2009 due to code deficiencies and leaks. The new design salvages the base of the existing pool and restores the exterior of the original pool building, renovating the interior to meet both historic and contemporary code standards.

Reconfiguring the entry sequence provided a new reception area with more security and access control and freed up the rotunda for year-round community use. Interior and exterior cedar adds regional context and provides a counterpoint to the extensive stone surfaces. The exterior stone wall is patched with salvaged stone, and the replicated vigas and trellises consist of regionally harvested heavy timber. The historic stone grandstand was retained, and colored concrete on the pool decks complements the historic character of the bathhouse.

The aquatic area includes a leisure pool for lap swimming, play features, water slides, an updated filtration system, concrete decks, fencing, sunbathing areas and shade structures. The renovations were designed to be as energy efficient as possible: The pool features a regenerative water system for filtering pool water, thereby saving more than 95 percent of the water used in a typical sand filtration system.
