Since 2004, use of the recreation facilities in Platte County has increased much more than county commissioners had anticipated, prompting the need for major additions and renovations at various facilities within the system, including a 49,000-square-foot expansion to Platte County Community Center North in Platte City. The expansion was designed to accommodate current wellness needs and trends with flexible spaces that could adapt as these requirements evolve. The existing facility remained fully operational throughout the 14-month renovation and addition.

The expansion included two pools: an eight-lane competition pool constructed in partnership with the Platte County R-III School District, and a therapy and recreational pool with zero-depth entry and a resistance river. A wall of glass punctuated with blue and green color separates the two bodies of water.

The competition pool features a submersible bulkhead system that allows the pool to accommodate both 25-meter and 25-yard events. The pool is complemented by a 200-person spectator seating area, a computerized timing system, team rooms, officials’ rooms and a concessions area.

The therapy pool doubles as a warm-up area for swimming events. This adjacent therapy pool also includes a new resistance walk, a vortex, a game area, water basketball and a zero-entry beach connecting to the existing recreation pool.
