Following the 2010 PG&E gas pipeline explosion, the City of San Bruno utilized restitution funds to invest in long-term community benefits. The San Bruno Community Foundation prioritized the development of a state-of-the-art Recreation and Aquatic Center (RAC) to meet the community’s recreational needs. Counsilman-Hunsaker was engaged in 2018 to conduct a feasibility study and retained as lead aquatics designer for the facility’s pools. The resulting two-story, 50,000-square-foot RAC replaced the aging Veterans Memorial Building and San Bruno Park Pool. The facility offers a community lounge, a gymnasium, fitness and multipurpose spaces, a walking track and city staff offices. Central to the RAC are its aquatics amenities, totaling 8,538 square feet. The indoor six-lane, 25-yard pool includes a dedicated programming area and a large stair entry, supporting lessons and community swim activities. An outdoor six-lane, 25-yard lap pool features a stair entry and competitive timing system for swim meets, while an adjacent 1,100-square-foot wading pool with zero-depth entry and interactive play elements provides a safe, engaging environment for children. Opened in July 2023, the RAC integrates indoor and outdoor aquatics with inclusive design, group fitness and community programming, establishing a vibrant hub for health, wellness and connection in San Bruno.
