The REC of Grapevine

Creative programming
The REC’s position in a growing community meant that designers had to be sensitive to user groups competing for space. By using creative programming and design layouts, different generations can make the most of the facility. For example, the design splits two components most frequently used by seniors at opposite ends of the building, dispersing the group and leaving more space for everyone in the middle.

A multigenerational facility
When the town of Grapevine decided to renovate and expand The REC, it sought to do so with the entire community in mind. Gathering input from the community, The REC accomplished the goal of allowing residents young and old a place under one roof. Kids enjoy the interactive water play structures and zero-depth entry pools, while their parents can keep an eye on them while lounging on the wide pool deck. The active-aging population enjoys the current channel, which allows for resistance walking as well as lap swimming and water aerobics.

State pride
Everything inside and outside of The REC was conceived, designed, specified and engineered to highlight what makes the city of Grapevine and state of Texas so special. A large decorative lone star welcomes young swimmers into the zero-depth entry pool, and the outdoor spray pad is shaped like the state of Texas, with spray sites originating from major municipal areas on the map. Additionally, the interior design pays homage to the city with its grapevine motif. Floatables are in the shape of grapes and trees, and the two-story waterslides are green and purple, another nod to the city’s name.
