CATERING TO MEMBERS

The rooftop pool was designed for the members of Meritt Clubs Canton, a fitness club that appeals mostly to the demographic of young city dwellers both with and without children. The facility caters both to young adults with amenities such as gorgeous city views and a full-service bar and café, and to families with a kids-only pool with play features such as a slide and fountains. Adults can also enjoy two elevated platforms complete with firepits and cabanas, which provide additional social space.

TRAFFIC AND ACCESS

The project prioritized both traffic flow and ease of access for maintenance crews. The use of a paver system instead of poured concrete provides members with additional comfort while walking on the pool deck, but also makes accessing plumbing for repairs much easier.

The project went slightly over budget, but did so for the sake of quality and safety. Many of the finishes were upgraded, and the height of the glass safety wall which encompasses the entire pool deck was raised.

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES

The largest challenge the project faced was simply moving all the materials eight stories to the rooftop. In addition, the rooftop bar and cafe space necessitated some creative solutions for service and safety. A storage area one level down provides backup to the bar, and the bar space is enclosed to help ensure safety in the event of inclement weather or strong winds. Finally, the facility created a drainage system beneath the pool that allows the club to prevent the cracking of drain pipes during winter months.
