Burleson Recreation Center (BRiCk)

Burleson, Texas
Construction Cost: $16 million
Area / Square Feet: 72,850
Occupancy Date: May 2010

With two basketball courts, an elevated jogging track, a 25-yard lap pool, a leisure pool, locker rooms, weight and exercise rooms, group exercise rooms, and meeting and party rooms, the BRiCk provides a multiuse facility for residents of this Ft. Worth suburb.

The premise behind the design of th BRiCk was to make visual connections between the various spaces within the building. From inside the lobby, one can observe almost every main activity area. On the outside, a dynamic exterior facade features large windows to incorporate views of the aquatic, fitness and jogging track components. The second-level fitness center is also visible when approaching the entrance. The City of Burleson required “classic Texas materials,” including limestone walls and piers, corrugated galvanized metal roofing and siding, and heavy-timber construction, where possible.

A key feature of the project was collaboration with the local school district to add three additional competition swim lanes and a swim team room. The project also involved the first phase of an outdoor family aquatic facility, including a six-lane, 25-yard competitive pool with two diving boards and a plunge slide.
