Built by the Ganado School District, the Ganado Aquatics Center is a simple, one-story structure designed not only for interscholastic use, but to serve the surrounding rural community as a focal point and gathering place.
Located on a pavilion adjacent to an 8,000-seat baseball stadium, it was important for the design of the aquatics center to strike a complementary aesthetic. The challenge was to reconcile the two different building scales while establishing a balanced and integrated look for the new facility. This was achieved through the use of similar building materials and by reversing some of the forms seen on the stadium, thus creating a mirror image of sorts via the aquatics center. Curving lines on the center reflect the shape of the nearby stadium.
The addition of the aquatics facility (which houses a 25-yard competition pool) to the ballpark pavilion enhances the overall appearance of the plaza. Strong, vivid colors enliven the interior?s simple lines and create an energetic ambience that appropriately reflects the function of the facility.
