William Boyce Thompson Field House

Exeter, NH
Construction Cost: Est. $35 million
Area / Square Feet: 160,000
Occupancy Date: January 2018

The Williams Boyce Thompson Field House was part of the athletics master plan for Phillips Exeter Academy. The project connects to the existing Love Gym athletic complex and surrounding landscape, incorporating a 70,000-square-foot field house, a 70,000-square-foot parking level beneath it, and a 13,000-square-foot wrestling mezzanine level above for a total building area of 160,000 square feet.

Construction began in the summer of 2016, and the facility opened in late January 2018. The field house contains a six-lane, 200-meter track for competitive meets and team practices. The track infield accommodates four indoor tennis courts, as well as space for shot put, discus and high jump. Also included are areas for batting cages and pole vault, long jump and triple jump competitions, as well as seating for event spectators and connections to locker rooms and support spaces for students and visiting teams. In addition to the wrestling area on the mezzanine level, a multipurpose room is provided for a variety of campus events with views out to the athletic fields.

The field house achieved LEED Gold certification and was named the 2019 Building of the Year by U.S. Green Building Council New Hampshire Chapter. In addition, the building design was part of a district master plan that utilized native-species landscape plantings and storm water control features to greatly reduce runoff and improve water quality, while transforming the south campus area from a vehicular access zone to a pedestrian-friendly series of spaces for students to safely connect to facilities for athletics and the arts.
