Dwight Schar Athletic Complex Ashland University

Ashland, Ohio
Construction Cost: $16.1 million
Occupancy Date: June 2010

The Dwight Schar Athletic Complex at Ashland University includes a football stadium with a two-story press box, concessions areas, a team store, a soccer field, track and field facilities and the 42,000-square-foot Robert Troop Center athletic support facility.

Overlooking one end zone, the Troop Center features reception areas for alumni, prospective student-athletes and guests. The building offers exceptional views of the field, a two-story weight-training area, meeting rooms, team study areas, a laundry room, an athletic training room, coaches' offices and multiple locker rooms.

For efficiency, the weight, laundry and training rooms are located on the first floor, allowing convenient access for all student-athletes. In order to maximize space, assistant coaches' offices were designed to double as team meeting rooms, eliminating the need for additional offices and circulation. Moreover, the lower-level locker rooms utilize shared shower and toilet facilities, which not only save space, but simplify the building’s plumbing system.

The buildings were designed to complement the historic Georgian architecture of the campus, with elements such as oversized keystones and a red brick exterior. Custom purple spandrel glass was also incorporated as a way to reiterate school pride while camouflaging essential construction materials.
