Located at the primary campus entrance and highly visible from the I-80 corridor, this new building at Cal Maritime Academy serves as the university’s public face. Its massing forms a memorable campus gateway, the double-height multipurpose room at the east edge of the facility a sentinel marking the entry on Maritime Academy Drive. The gymnasium is offset from the multipurpose volume to create a welcoming entry gesture for the campus.

The facility provides recreational and instruction space for the Cal Maritime cadets and is the new home for Keelhauler athletics. The 50-meter pool is designed to be enclosed in the future and hosts competitive swimming and water polo matches. With its specially designed tower and wave-generating features, the pool also accommodates water-survival and rescue training and certification. The new building also includes a competition-level NCAA gymnasium and other training, administrative and support spaces.

Building materials were selected to celebrate the university’s maritime focus — it is the only degree-granting maritime academy on the West Coast. The profile of the gym evokes maritime references, while a brick base provides continuity with the historic building material of the campus.
