SECU Arena Renovation and Expansion, Towson University

Towson, MD
Construction Cost: $65.5 million
Area / Square Feet: 171,000 sf
Occupancy Date: June 2013

The Towson University SECU Arena renovation and expansion included the introduction of a partially sunken bowl, with most spectators entering at its midpoint. By splitting the bowl into upper and lower seating, the arena can be sectioned off for smaller events to create more intimacy.

The design also includes an array of multipurpose spaces, including a double-height galleria on the west side of the concourse level (home to a university store and coat check room), a VIP-level multipurpose room offering views down to the main arena entry and out to the varsity soccer field and football stadium, and open spaces at the arena’s corners that can also be rented or used for private functions. There are also four VIP suites.

SECU Arena is located on a sloped site and is connected to an existing arena that was converted to a practice gym and support space. The new arena is built partially below grade; the new competition floor sits one level below the old building’s basement level, which now contains newly renovated team locker rooms and lounges, strength conditioning space, a sports medicine suite and other ancillary spaces.
