Built in 1968, the University of Michigan’s Crisler Arena — now known as Crisler Center — could no longer meet the needs of today’s spectators, coaches and players. A master plan called for three projects to be completed in sequence from January 2009 to December 2012.
First, Crisler Arena’s mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems were upgraded and a new central video board was added. The arena renovation’s second phase included a major concourse expansion, new restrooms and concessions, a private club, two team stores, ticketing areas, an audio/video studio, press areas, loading and storage improvements, and a roof deck and garden. Next, the William Davidson Player Development Center brought 63,000 square feet of practice and support space for men’s and women’s basketball, including two full courts; cardio, strength and conditioning facilities; hydrotherapy and training areas; offices and video rooms.
The overall design goal was to create a distinct identity for the basketball programs while harmonizing with the existing arena and nearby stadium. Brick and cast stone comprise large areas of the facade, while the corner lobby/Hall of Fame uses light and reflective materials such as glass, aluminum and metal panels. A 36-foot-tall glass oval is a dramatic focal point for the public entry.
