With the goal to redefine how student-athletes achieve academic excellence, compete for championships and become future leaders, the University of Virginia embarked on a journey to create a new athletics complex that will connect 750 student-athletes across 27 varsity sports. This multiphased project includes the recently completed Football Operations Center, an Olympic Sports Center currently under construction, and two natural grass practice fields.
Located at the heart of UVA’s athletic village, the Hardie Football Operations Center acts as a central hub, linking outdoor fields with existing practice facilities. Featuring an iconic pavilion exterior and a public plaza, the facility provides a seamless connection to UVA’s central grounds. This new facility replaces the McCue Center, which previously served as UVA football’s home for over 30 years but no longer met the kind of demands facing teams in today’s Power Four conferences.
The comprehensive facility includes a state-of-the-art strength and conditioning center, locker rooms, a sports medicine suite, a dedicated dining hall, a players’ lounge, position meeting rooms, and support spaces. Designed for efficiency, it minimizes the time spent moving between areas, allowing athletes to make the most of their limited practice hours.
Through thoughtful design and integrated environmental graphics, the Football Operations Center promotes teamwork, legacy and leadership as part of a broader initiative to provide student athletes with top-tier resources that will prepare them for success both on and off the field.
