The Charles Alan Wright Fields at the Berry M. Whitaker Sports Complex (Wright-Whitaker Sports Complex) is the primary outdoor recreation facility for the University of Texas at Austin. It is the home for field sports in intramurals, sport clubs and the majority of outdoor informal recreation on campus. Last renovated in 1981, the complex has been transformed into a state-of-the-art facility that still honors its history.

This reconstruction included a new 4,945-square-foot gateway building with meeting lounge, 328,000 square feet of synthetic turf, two scoreboards, four lighted sand volleyball courts, a lawn and pavilion, a patio with a fire pit, and a community garden. Infrastructure improvements took the form of an irrigation system, field lighting, an intercom system and decorative fencing.

The project also involved renovating a 2,000-square-foot support building, as well as grading and re-sodding 12 multipurpose grass fields. The synthetic and natural fields host multiple sports throughout the year, including flag football, soccer, softball, lacrosse, rugby, Ultimate Frisbee, and Quidditch.

The complex is two miles north of campus, making it essential that it display features that give it a “UT” identity. This was achieved by incorporating campus design elements including the campus brick mixture, cast stone and exposed wood. The density of venues has contributed to creating a vibrant, active complex.
