The two cities of Tama and Toledo, with a combined population of 5,270 people, had a 52-year-old pool that sat on the dividing line between the two towns. But then the communities’ city councils reached a unanimous decision to construct a new family aquatic center, with bonds to be paid by a one-cent sales tax. Because of their collaboration, the citizens of Tama and Toledo share the enjoyment of a beautiful family aquatic center.
The new pool has a surface area of 9,295 square feet, with a bather capacity of 558. It boasts a large zero-depthentry play area with several water features, including two geysers, a “beached boat” water slide and three spraying palm trees. Also featured are six 25-meter lanes, 1-meter and 3-meter diving boards, a drop slide, a large speed slide and a water slide. Approximately 14,438 square feet of concrete deck space surrounds the pool, as does an abundance of green space for sunbathers.
The 4,180-square-foot, Prairie-style bathhouse features an open cathedral design with a large pop-up element that allows for abundant natural light; a low-maintenance, standing-seam metal roof; a family changing room; and private showers in the locker rooms. The 3,450-square-foot food court area has a canopy plus two large shade umbrellas for the dining area.
