This arena expansion and recreation center project responds to record-high enrollment numbers and an increased demand for recreation, fitness and athletic programs. The character of the buildings — defined by cedar siding and natural river-hewn stone, while interior spaces feature warm materials and open floor plans — creates ideal environments for learning and recreating.
The new Brookdale Recreation and Events Center (BREC) includes a large fitness center, a group exercise studio and a multipurpose gymnasium. The facility forms a link along the main campus spine, bridging the arena and recently constructed Student Life Center. The BREC and the arena share a common entry lobby, as well as athletic and recreation offices, while separate lobby areas allow each facility to operate independently.
While the facilities’ sloped and peaked roofs recall nearby buildings and integrate the forms into the campus context, overhangs, columns and other details make the scale of the structures more appropriate to pedestrians. A new vestibule entry for the arena creates an airlock for cold weather, as well as a more inviting and exciting entry facade. Inside, existing offices and multiuse rooms were replaced by new and expanded restrooms and concessions spaces. In addition to upgrades to spectator areas, the lower event level was completely reorganized to add new locker rooms, a sports medicine center, offices, loading and storage areas, and a connection to the BREC.
