Fusion Recplex

Burbank, IL
Construction Cost: $6.56 million
Area / Square Feet: 37,649
Occupancy Date: September 2013

The Burbank Park District wanted a community facility with a “fusion” to meet the indoor recreation needs of all ages. With a tight budget and lack of land acquisition funds, the district constructed a new facility in Stevenson Park, between the original 4,098-square-foot Stevenson Room and the Burbank Water Park.

The resulting Fusion Recplex includes a new gymnasium, a fitness center, locker rooms, dance/aerobics spaces, a kids zone, a running track and a dividable program room. The entry lobby is the “nerve center” of the facility, with access to all programs and a community gathering place.

Surrounding the existing building on three sides, the addition offers a different aesthetic per the park district’s request. Still, the addition complements the existing building in several ways. The sloped roof, face brick and metal panels of the addition are details carried over from the existing building. In the addition’s interior, the exterior wall of face brick on the original building was respected and left exposed to view. The economical use of durable exterior and interior materials, as well as sustainable practices, makes this facility the focal point of the community.
