Bracebridge serves both permanent residents and a large seasonal population, placing growing pressure on aging civic infrastructure, including the 1949 Memorial Arena and the 1906 Carnegie Library. Replacing these facilities as a single, co-located complex created an opportunity to consolidate recreation, library and community functions into one shared public facility.
The site is located where the urban fabric transitions into densely wooded terrain. This condition informed both site planning and landscape design, with planted outdoor spaces mediating between the building and its surroundings. The main lobby functions as the organizational center of the building, providing visual connections and direct access to the arena, fieldhouse, library and second-level community hall, while maintaining strong sightlines to the surrounding landscape.
Exterior and interior materials draw from local building traditions and regional geology, using masonry, wood and restrained color palettes to reflect the textures and tones of the Muskoka landscape. Interior wood elements reference local tree species, while detailing and proportions recall vernacular cottages and farm buildings.
Environmental performance was a key driver throughout the project. The building envelope exceeds code requirements, with controlled glazing and thermal zoning tailored to program needs. The arena and fieldhouse operate independently from warmer community spaces, improving energy efficiency. The building is designed to accommodate future solar installation, and the arenaâs refrigeration system captures waste heat for reuse, reducing operational energy demand. Low-flow fixtures further support long-term resource efficiency.
