The Airway Heights Community Recreation Center provides a much-needed “heart of the community” via a series of social and recreational spaces for the rapidly growing population of downtown Spokane, as well as Fairchild Air Force Base.

The facility includes an expansive lobby, a multipurpose community space with kitchen, a gymnasium, a child watch area and a natatorium featuring a recreation pool with a lazy river, as well as a large play structure, lap pool, hot tub and sauna. The second floor contains a fitness center with cardio equipment, a weights area and group exercise/studio space for hosting classes such as Pilates, yoga, karate and group cycling. Site development includes 7.5 acres of multipurpose playing fields, a basketball court, a pavilion and parking.

Floor planning and circulation concepts provide effective movement for the current layout, while simultaneously anticipating future expansion. The unique corner-oriented main entrance will ultimately become more centralized as expansion takes place. As funding becomes available, additional aquatics and gym space will be added, as will space for seniors, teens and preschool children.

The project was delivered via a progressive design-build approach, with the owner, design team, contractors and suppliers working side-by-side to yield excellent value for every dollar spent. This delivery method was also critical to facilitating a fast-track approach to construction.
