The Spring Hill RECenter has been recently transformed into a multi-use facility that engages the collective mind, body and spirit of the McLean community. The new design includes an expanded array of program elements and an indoor/outdoor transparency that unifies the facility with its beautiful park site.

The renovation took advantage of the existing two-story bar configuration to introduce new amenity spaces and open up the building entry. A new palette of exterior materials, including flat lock zinc panels and sun louvers, provide a stimulating depth to the former fortress-like exterior appearance. At night, for the first time, the facility comes to life with engaging views of the recreation activities within.

The recreation program elements have been expanded to address contemporary community needs. The original facility’s community rooms and eight-lane pool have been replaced with a large fitness zone, group fitness rooms and a new multisport gymnasium — each with expansive park views. Fresh interior materials and colors coupled with new interior transparency result in an organizational clarity that seamlessly unifies the entire facility. Glass curtainwalls provide an immediate connection to the outdoors from the elevated track as well as introduce natural light from above into the gymnasium, minimizing glare on the courts.

The dynamic change resulting from the renovation and expansion is most evident on the elevated track, where every step provides new exterior and interior perspectives. This relationship between community, fitness and the environment helped drive the RECenter toward a LEED Silver rating.
