Greeley?s new recreation center is organized to allow users clear views from a central circulation spine into various activity spaces. Facility features include a three-court field house, an indoor aquatic park, a fitness center, a group exercise studio, two multipurpose rooms, a senior room, a child-care area and an arcade.
Interior materials are straightforward and durable. In the strength-training area and aerobics room, for example, ceilings consist of an exposed steel structure with metal decking, while exposed concrete masonry unit walls are used throughout. The main circulation spine?s floors are stained concrete or porcelain ceramic tile, and carpet is found in offices, meeting areas and cardio areas.
Careful consideration was given to exterior materials selection in order to create warmth and help the facility blend in with its natural and artificial surroundings.
Architectural precast concrete, stacked stone, steel, aluminum and glass storefront walls, and standing-seam metal and flat roofs combine with horizontal, simulated wood planking to provide the appropriate warmth, scale and character. Windows on all sides of the facility allow for short-range views into the adjacent community park and long-range views to the mountains beyond, while showering the interior with natural daylight.
