St. Paul's School Athletic & Fitness Center Renovation and Addition

Concord, NH
Construction Cost: $19.5 million
Area / Square Feet: 150,000
Occupancy Date: September 2004

As one of the first buildings a visitor encounters at the private, collegepreparatory St. Paul’s School, the Athletic & Fitness Center has been designed to fit in comfortably with the vocabulary of both the newer and more traditional buildings on the main campus. In support of the school’s focus on wellness, the new gym is accessible to the entire community.

The siting of the new center allowed the school to reuse and connect two existing buildings, which minimized the impact of the project on the site. A centrally located, two-story center court was created to connect the Athletic & Fitness Center to the existing Cage and tennis buildings, while maximizing views of activities in the pool, gymnasia and fitness areas.

The project’s program includes two gyms with two basketball practice courts each, home and visitor locker rooms, an eight-lane swimming pool, fitness and training spaces, an ergometer room, a free-weight and cardiovascular fitness room, and a large multipurpose aerobics/wrestling room.

In keeping with the strategic goals of energy conservation and sustainability, the LEED™-registered project recycled more than 85 percent of construction waste, used low-emitting and locally manufactured materials, employed water-efficient landscaping, optimized energy performance and indoor air-quality management, and reduced light pollution.
