The new aquatic center replaces an outdated outdoor facility within Washington Manor Park. The original bathhouse, which was practically hidden by the park’s tennis courts, has been updated to provide support facilities for both the park and the aquatic center. The new and existing buildings complement each other and serve to partially enclose the aquatic center.
The facility provides a much-needed public identity, and an adjacent community building is painted to match, creating a unified complex.
The swimming pool is designed with multiple activity areas to promote maximum utilization. The facility also uses energy-efficient pool heaters, light fixtures and room-conditioning equipment (all with digital controls); thermal pool covers; low-water-use plumbing fixtures; and water-efficient landscaping.
Amenities include a zero-depth entry that leads into a shallow pool with interactive water features; three lanes for lap swimming, lessons and other recreational activities; a water slide; an interactive sprayground; and approximately 11,000 square feet of lawn area. The project was designed to accommodate a future competition pool.
