The Port Coquitlam Community Centre is a recreation and wellness facility designed with community at the forefront. The center replaced the existing Port Coquitlam Recreation Complex, Wilson Senior Centre and Terry Fox Library with a new community hub.
The project was developed on an urban site with challenging geotechnical conditions, and through a multiphased approach that allowed the provision of uninterrupted recreation services. Each phase of the project was carefully planned to ensure that new components were seamlessly integrated into the existing facilities before components with the same functionality were decommissioned to open space for new construction. At all times during the construction, two arenas, a library and a senior center remained operational.
The new facility includes an aquatics center with an accessible leisure pool connected to an outdoor spray park, hydrotherapy features and a large hot tub. The facility also features two community ice rinks and a 780-seat spectator ice arena, as well as a new public library, a gymnasium and a fitness center with a sport medicine clinic. Rounding out the indoor program are multipurpose rooms, all-age facilities with a lounge, a game room, a large reception hall with a commercial kitchen, a café, a child-minding area, offices for the city’s parks and recreation department, and a semi-underground parking structure with 425 stalls.
The outdoor program includes courts for basketball and pickleball, outdoor gym equipment, a walking path connected to a larger community walking network, a playground, an amphitheater, and the aforementioned spray park integrated with the indoor leisure pool.
