Walter J. Hawrys Campus Recreation Center - Stony Brook University

Stony Brook, NY
Construction Cost: $28.6 million
Area / Square Feet: 90,000
Occupancy Date: October 2012

Stony Brook University’s new recreation center is situated on a sloping site that connects the athletic center and the student union, and provides more than 90,000 square feet of dedicated recreational space.

Boldly colored interior wall panels identify key spaces in the building as seen on the day lockers in hallways and adjacent to fitness areas to break up long corridors and wall areas. The facility’s design blends horizontally and vertically stacked metal and phenolic panels in a range of reds, grays and gray-black to black that line up perfectly from the exterior to the interior. Multi-hued red panels and glazed concrete block were utilized on the exterior to give the building a “wow” factor.

The building exceeds expectations for LEED Silver certification, is tracking for LEED Gold certification and uses 45 percent less energy than ASHRAE 90.1. This reduction was achieved partly through extensive solar modeling, which resulted in the provision of solar fins that maximize daylight while reducing heat load. Other sustainability initiatives included energy management systems that modulate heating and cooling as variable occupancies require, and white roof surfaces that reduce heat absorption.
