New NFL Rule Restricts Options for Snow Removal

Andy Berg Headshot

A new NFL rule will make it harder for teams to clear snow from the field during inclement weather.

According to the Indy Star, teams will incur a 15-year penalty if they request help from sideline personnel in clearing snow from the field.

Rule 13-1-1 has been amended to state: "It is impermissible for the grounds crew or other team personnel to clear away snow for a try kick, field goal, punt, or kickoff.”

The rule comes after the Indianapolis Colts had help last season from sideline staff in clearing a spot for kicker Adam Vinatieri to launch the game-tying extra point against Buffalo during a particularly intense snow storm.

Players on the field are allowed to use only their hands and feet to clear snow.
