We are a company of aquatic professionals, athletes, operators, enthusiasts and more — so we endeavor to inspire and provide something beyond just swimming pool design or help with programming and risk management.
We want individuals and communities alike to know the same joy that every one of us feels when we see a pool, touch the water, bring our kids to lessons or observe lifeguards on duty.
Who is Counsilman and who is Hunsaker? These are two interesting words to be put together, and furthermore, brand as one company. The legacy of two gentlemen, with these last names, is impressive — just two hyphenated names together as proper nouns — shows the bond they share and the desire to build something great. James Counsilman, an Olympic swim coach based at Indiana University, and Joe Hunsaker, a former collegiate athlete, who considered “Doc” Counsilman a mentor. Over 50 years ago, they had a vision to bring the joys of aquatics to universities and communities — and to bring something special to those families, swim team members, and coaches.
To achieve such a vision, Counsilman-Hunsaker began offering ever diversifying aquatic solutions for every facility, person and need. We find uniqueness in both the consulting services we offer and in the partnerships we’ve established along the way. This is an effort to help you and your community experience the passion that aquatics can bring, to see the smiles on children’s faces, and to maintain physical fitness — all through stunning, expertly designed aquatic facilities. In doing so, we can also meet the needs of the community by running the facility safely and sustainably for everyone who enters its doors.

So how can we help you? Our aquatic offerings began with facility design engineering, specifically at the university level. But we didn’t stop there. We pioneered the leisure pool industry with state-of-the-art precision and ensured that millions have access to the most beautiful pools across all 50 states, as well as internationally.
Then we expanded our service reach to include physical pool audits for aging facilities, feasibility studies and aquatic master planning. We wanted to ensure every community has access to experience the joy of aquatics, and operational and risk management guidance to guarantee safe and sustainable facilities and experiences. Our partnerships include FINA, USA Swimming, AOAP, Pool and Hot Tub Alliance, American Red Cross, Recreonics, National Drowning Prevention Association and Total Aquatic Programming — so regardless of an individual’s affiliation, somewhere we can find an instant connection with them.
Our clients include architects, developers, owners and operators. Every guest who steps foot into one of the facilities that we’ve created is also our client. Our goal is to inspire everyone to dream more, learn more, do more, and without question — simply become more.
