Every Night Lights: Extending Facility Usage Creates New Opportunities

Friday night lights used to be a destination moment. Today, they’re just one part of a much longer—and busier—schedule for many athletic facilities.

From early‑morning practices and late‑night games to multi‑day tournaments, recruiting visits, alumni events, and even movie nights, facilities are operating around the clock. For athletic directors and facility managers, the challenge isn’t simply keeping the lights on—it’s doing so efficiently, reliably, and without adding complexity for already stretched staff.

Across the country, schools and venues are finding that modern LED lighting systems—especially complete, integrated solutions from trusted providers—can help expand facility use, attract new partnerships, and create long‑term value while maintaining control over operating costs. Here’s how several organizations are unlocking the full potential of their facilities.

Palomar College: A Community College with a Professional Stadium Feel

After more than 80 years without a home football stadium, Palomar College in San Marcos, Calif., set out to change the trajectory of its athletic program. The ambitious goal was to elevate the student‑athlete experience and position the campus as a destination for third‑party events.

To achieve that vision, Palomar partnered with Musco Lighting to equip its new 3,500‑seat stadium with TLC for LED® lighting, color‑changing luminaires, and a Show‑Light® entertainment system. The result is broadcast‑quality field lighting paired with dynamic light shows that enhance the fan experience without sacrificing visibility or safety.

Following the facility upgrades, the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) San Diego Section selected Palomar to host three high school football championship games, while professional organizations—including the NFL and United Football League—have used the facility for practices, combines, and scouting events.

“Typically, fans only get this level of entertainment at professional sporting events,” said Julie Lanthier Bandy, Palomar College’s director of marketing, communications, and public affairs. “The system also gives our facility an advantage when outside event organizers are making site‑selection decisions, because it provides an atmosphere very few other sites of this size can provide.”

James Madison University: Flexibility That Supports Growth

When James Madison University renovated its softball stadium in 2023, the athletics department wasn’t just thinking about today’s needs. Leaders wanted a lighting upgrade that could support higher‑profile competition and more flexible scheduling.

Musco retrofitted an LED system upgrade onto the stadium’s existing poles, delivering improved performance while also saving money by utilizing existing structural components. The upgrade helped JMU to attract more high-profile events: in summer 2025, the university was selected to host the 2027 Sun Belt Conference Softball Championship.

The system has also transformed day‑to‑day operations. With Musco’s Control‑Link® control and monitoring system, authorized staff can schedule, operate, and monitor the lights remotely using a smartphone or web browser.

That flexibility supports impromptu recruiting visits, extended practices, and special events—allowing staff to say “yes” more often without adding operational burden.

Wynne High School: Building Community through Evening Events

On game nights, the music is pumping and the lights are dancing in the football stadium at Wynne High School in Wynne, Ark. The district’s custom LED lighting system is designed for safety, playability, and fan experience, with flexible controls that make it easier for staff to accommodate community events.

“There are so many ways for other groups to benefit from our lights,” said Athletic Director Bryan Mattox. “We can host camps at night. We can do movie nights at the stadium—and dim the lights to where they don’t affect the quality of the movie on our video board, but there’s enough light for people to walk around safely. That’s a great thing, to be able to share the wealth.”

Ottumwa High School: Gymnasium Lighting That Elevates Gamedays

In Ottumwa, Iowa, the Ottumwa High School Bulldogs play in a state-of-the-art indoor athletic complex designed to elevate the experience for basketball, volleyball, wrestling, and special events. Multi-zone lighting controls provide the right amount of light whether the facility is operating as one large gym space or two smaller court areas. Color-changing luminaires and dynamic lighting effects add energy for games and pep rallies.

“The first thing everyone notices is obviously the light shows,” said Ottumwa Community School District Activities Director Brandon Brooks. “Beyond that, it’s just high-quality lighting, with the right amount of light in the right places.”

Mount St. Louis Moonstone: Family-Run Ski Resort with Family in Mind

In a very different setting, Mount St. Louis Moonstone ski resort demonstrates how lighting can extend operations—and demand—well beyond traditional hours. What began as a limited experiment in night skiing grew into a full investment in LED lighting across all 36 runs for this family-friendly resort in Coldwater, Ontario, Canada. The resort more than doubled annual visitors and created a signature attraction with Yodler, a color‑washed ski run that draws attention—and social media posts—from across the region.

From Extended Hours to Long‑Term Value

For athletic facilities, longer operating hours don’t have to mean higher stress or runaway costs. Complete LED lighting systems—designed with performance, controls, and long‑term service in mind—allow staff to focus less on managing infrastructure and more on serving athletes, fans, and partners.

With advanced glare control, flexible controls, entertainment options, and comprehensive parts‑and‑labor warranties, Musco helps facilities operate confidently under the lights—whether it’s Friday night or every night.
