Friday night lights used to be a destination moment. Today, theyâre just one part of a much longerâand busierâschedule for many athletic facilities.
From earlyâmorning practices and lateânight games to multiâday tournaments, recruiting visits, alumni events, and even movie nights, facilities are operating around the clock. For athletic directors and facility managers, the challenge isnât simply keeping the lights onâitâs doing so efficiently, reliably, and without adding complexity for already stretched staff.
Across the country, schools and venues are finding that modern LED lighting systemsâespecially complete, integrated solutions from trusted providersâcan help expand facility use, attract new partnerships, and create longâterm value while maintaining control over operating costs. Hereâs how several organizations are unlocking the full potential of their facilities.
Palomar College: A Community College with a Professional Stadium Feel
After more than 80 years without a home football stadium, Palomar College in San Marcos, Calif., set out to change the trajectory of its athletic program. The ambitious goal was to elevate the studentâathlete experience and position the campus as a destination for thirdâparty events.
To achieve that vision, Palomar partnered with Musco Lighting to equip its new 3,500âseat stadium with TLC for LEDÂŽ lighting, colorâchanging luminaires, and a ShowâLightÂŽ entertainment system. The result is broadcastâquality field lighting paired with dynamic light shows that enhance the fan experience without sacrificing visibility or safety.
Following the facility upgrades, the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) San Diego Section selected Palomar to host three high school football championship games, while professional organizationsâincluding the NFL and United Football Leagueâhave used the facility for practices, combines, and scouting events.
âTypically, fans only get this level of entertainment at professional sporting events,â said Julie Lanthier Bandy, Palomar Collegeâs director of marketing, communications, and public affairs. âThe system also gives our facility an advantage when outside event organizers are making siteâselection decisions, because it provides an atmosphere very few other sites of this size can provide.â
James Madison University: Flexibility That Supports Growth
When James Madison University renovated its softball stadium in 2023, the athletics department wasnât just thinking about todayâs needs. Leaders wanted a lighting upgrade that could support higherâprofile competition and more flexible scheduling.
Musco retrofitted an LED system upgrade onto the stadiumâs existing poles, delivering improved performance while also saving money by utilizing existing structural components. The upgrade helped JMU to attract more high-profile events: in summer 2025, the university was selected to host the 2027 Sun Belt Conference Softball Championship.
The system has also transformed dayâtoâday operations. With Muscoâs ControlâLinkÂŽ control and monitoring system, authorized staff can schedule, operate, and monitor the lights remotely using a smartphone or web browser.
That flexibility supports impromptu recruiting visits, extended practices, and special eventsâallowing staff to say âyesâ more often without adding operational burden.

Wynne High School: Building Community through Evening Events
On game nights, the music is pumping and the lights are dancing in the football stadium at Wynne High School in Wynne, Ark. The districtâs custom LED lighting system is designed for safety, playability, and fan experience, with flexible controls that make it easier for staff to accommodate community events.
âThere are so many ways for other groups to benefit from our lights,â said Athletic Director Bryan Mattox. âWe can host camps at night. We can do movie nights at the stadiumâand dim the lights to where they donât affect the quality of the movie on our video board, but thereâs enough light for people to walk around safely. Thatâs a great thing, to be able to share the wealth.â

Ottumwa High School: Gymnasium Lighting That Elevates Gamedays
In Ottumwa, Iowa, the Ottumwa High School Bulldogs play in a state-of-the-art indoor athletic complex designed to elevate the experience for basketball, volleyball, wrestling, and special events. Multi-zone lighting controls provide the right amount of light whether the facility is operating as one large gym space or two smaller court areas. Color-changing luminaires and dynamic lighting effects add energy for games and pep rallies.
âThe first thing everyone notices is obviously the light shows,â said Ottumwa Community School District Activities Director Brandon Brooks. âBeyond that, itâs just high-quality lighting, with the right amount of light in the right places.â

Mount St. Louis Moonstone: Family-Run Ski Resort with Family in Mind
In a very different setting, Mount St. Louis Moonstone ski resort demonstrates how lighting can extend operationsâand demandâwell beyond traditional hours. What began as a limited experiment in night skiing grew into a full investment in LED lighting across all 36 runs for this family-friendly resort in Coldwater, Ontario, Canada. The resort more than doubled annual visitors and created a signature attraction with Yodler, a colorâwashed ski run that draws attentionâand social media postsâfrom across the region.

From Extended Hours to LongâTerm Value
For athletic facilities, longer operating hours donât have to mean higher stress or runaway costs. Complete LED lighting systemsâdesigned with performance, controls, and longâterm service in mindâallow staff to focus less on managing infrastructure and more on serving athletes, fans, and partners.
With advanced glare control, flexible controls, entertainment options, and comprehensive partsâandâlabor warranties, Musco helps facilities operate confidently under the lightsâwhether itâs Friday night or every night.
