In 2019, the City of Steinbach commissioned Verne Reimer Architecture to prepare a report to consider upgrades to acoustic, indoor air quality and lighting for its aquatics center. The SAC, originally designed by Jeff Penner in 2004 during his tenure at GBR Architects, has proven to be a very busy destination for many in the region. The project proceeded in the midst of the pandemic, utilizing the shutdown of the facility as an opportunity to complete the final design and construction work.
The design comprised state-of-the art pool treatment, dehumidification and HVAC systems. The high-performance building envelope was designed to be energy-efficient while allowing daylight and views to the pastoral site context.
A new acoustic panel system uses locally manufactured acoustic panels integrated in the ceiling with an indirect LED lighting system. The lighting system and mechanical interface were implemented through an elegant architectural wood and steel trellis extending the length of the facility.
The result is a facility that features greatly improved acoustic performance, reduced chloramine values for bathers, and a bright and lively space.
