Windsor Community Recreation Center Addition and Remodel

Windsor, CO 2018

Project Description

A fresh start

Windsor Community Recreation Center’s aquatics and recreation addition follows the design aesthetic of the original building, using similar materials and forms, while modernizing some dated elements. The overall effect is a cohesive design expression with an updated look. Nearly every existing space was remodeled with a new color palette and finish materials.

Something for everyone

The facility was designed to be a truly multigenerational center that offers recreation activities and programs for all ages. The zero-depth entry leisure pool with a connected lazy river offers a great space for a variety of programming options. Fun-seekers enjoy the vortex and slide, while smaller children can take advantage of a splash pad with five geysers, five propulsion units, 14 spray jets and a ceiling-mounted rain cloud. For those looking for a workout, the facility features a three-lane, 25-yard lap pool and a whirlpool with a 23-person capacity.

It’s easy being green

The expanded recreation center is designed to be a high-performance building that reduces long-term operating costs and includes the addition of a rooftop photovoltaic solar array to capture solar energy. The design team utilized a program from the local utility provider to study energy use and better understand how to reduce energy consumption. Because of these efforts, the operators received a significant rebate once the facility was in operation. Water use in the building was substantially reduced using regenerative-media filters on the swimming pool and low-flow plumbing fixtures in locker rooms. Additionally, variable-frequency drives were installed on the pool pumps to allow water flow to be fine-tuned to what is required and nothing more.
