The Pools at Rosemary Recreation Complex
The Pools at Rosemary Recreation ComplexNeedham, MA 2019
The project represents the renovation of a uniquely position aquatics destination, with pools located immediately adjacent to a natural body of water. The original complex was expected to last 10 years in this location, while Rosemary Lake was undergoing cleanup, but instead the pool was in use for nearly half a century. Still, the maintenance of the complex, which required the lake to be drained every time the pool was emptied for cleaning due to how the pool wall was constructed, proved daunting.
Renovation brought two pools to the site — one for wading and one for swimming laps — as well as Parks and Recreation Department offices, Health Department offices, programming space and a spray park. The pools are at the groundwater elevation, so the pool structure needed to be secured to the ground with a ballast slab and tie-rods, and a retaining wall was needed to separate the pools from the pond. Careful consideration resulted not only in the largest municipal pool in Needham, but a facility that offers new amenities that the community has long desired.
