A man died this week after breaking into an Arizona aquatics center and becoming trapped in a water slide support structure.

A Scottsdale police officer heard someone calling for help around 12:30 a.m. on Monday while driving home. Police searched the area but were unable to find the source of the calls for some time.

Officers later narrowed the location to the Eldorado Aquatic Fitness Center and found the man around 2 a.m.

Police would later learn that the man had jumped the fence to the aquatic center and gained entry to the swimming pool. After swimming, the man made his way to the top of a large water slide at the park. The slide is supported by a large hollow steel tube, and the man climbed into it and became stuck.

Sargent Keven Watts told The Arizona Republic that the tube acted like a megaphone when the man began calling for help, which explains how the patrol officer heard him from a quarter-mile away.

The man stopped communicating with emergency personnel and was dead by the time he was extracted around 7 a.m.
