Allegations into a hazing incident are behind Carter football coach Derek Witt being placed on administrative leave, according to documents obtained by USA TODAY NETWORK-Tennessee.

Witt remains on leave with pay while the investigation is ongoing.

The report from the State Board of Education refers to "allegations that teacher/coach did not report hazing that occurred in the football locker room between seniors and freshmen."

Witt received notice of the suspension on April 6, but refused to sign the administrative leave guidelines and it went into effect April 9.

The Knox County Board of Education administrative suspension policy reads the following: "The Director of Schools may suspend an employee of the school system at any time when deemed necessary. The Director of Schools shall suspend an employee with pay or without pay at his discretion provided however, that disciplinary suspensions without pay shall not exceed three days."

Witt, who teaches technical education, received tenure in 2009. His current salary information was unavailable but as of 2015, he was paid $43,910 as a teacher and he had an athletic supplement of $9,702 as an assistant football coach, assistant wrestling coach and head track coach. Witt is now the head football coach and track coach.

Carter's spring practice schedule and who will lead it is unknown.

The Hornets finished 2-8 last season.

Witt, a 1994 graduate from Carter, took over the program last February. He had served as an assistant the previous two seasons under Jeff McMillan.
