Parents of a 14-year-old Davidson High School football player who sustained a broken right arm in an apparent vicious beating by teammates in the school's locker room reportedly are suing the Mobile County (Ala.) Board of Education for a large amount.
Mary Rayford-Kim, the mother of Rodney Kim Jr., told AL.com's Ben Thomas about a planned $12 million lawsuit on Sunday. In addition to the money, the family is asking for Davidson to forfeit all football games for the 2018 season, for each of the school's football coaches to be fired, for all 20 football players involved in the beating to be charged and for hazing to be banned in all high schools throughout the country.
Video of the beating spread throughout the internet last week. The incident happened on April 27 after a spring practice. Four students have been suspended as a result.
A Mobile police spokesperson told AL.com shortly after the event that "the victim stated he was headed to the locker room and one of the leaders of the team pushed him into the locker room and about 20 other upperclassmen started hitting, kicking and physically jumping on top of him after practice." The event allegedly was a hazing incident.
The student affected, a quarterback, needed surgery to repair his arm. He won't return to Davidson this year.
