The NCAA is removing ACT/SAT requirements for incoming freshman student-athletes.
College basketball writer Adam Zagoria posted an NCAA release stating that “students with an expected Spring/Summer 2020 graduation date who initially enroll full time in 2020-21 will receive an automatic initial-eligibility waiver (athletics aid, practice and competition) in the academic certification process.”
The waiver, which is being put in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic, does not require any standardized test scores, but does require at least a 2.3 GPA and that the students met the core-course progression requirement during their first three years of high school.
Standardized tests haven’t been available due to safe-at-home orders enacted during the coronavirus outbreak. The New York Times reported Wednesday that virtual versions of the SAT and ACT are in development.
The NCAA traditionally combines prospective athletes' GPA and standardized test scores in a sliding scale that determines eligibility.
